Uncovering Your True Self: Steps to Release Conditioning and Connect with Inner Power




In a world full of expectations and constant noise, many people struggle to find their true selves. We carry beliefs shaped by society, family, and past experiences that often hide who we really are. Beneath these layers lies an authentic self that is steady, whole, and free. This post explores how to release conditioning and reconnect with your inner power to live more authentically.



Understanding Your True Self


Your true self is not the thoughts or stories you tell yourself. It is the awareness behind those thoughts. Spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle explains this clearly: “You are not your mind. You are not your thoughts. You are the awareness behind them.” This awareness is constant and unchanging, unlike the temporary identities shaped by fear or social pressure.


To access this authentic self, we must first recognise the conditioning that clouds our perception. Society, family, and our own fears often impose beliefs that create a sense of separation, scarcity, and limitation. The ego, driven by fear, tries to keep us anchored in these illusions, preventing us from fully expressing our true nature.


Conditioning creates a false sense of separation and limitation. It convinces us that we are defined by our roles, failures, or by what others expect. The ego uses fear to keep us trapped in these beliefs, making it hard to express our true nature. Recognising this conditioning is the first step toward freedom.



Becoming Aware of Conditioning





Conditioning is a key psychological process involving the association of a stimulus with a response, rooted in behaviourism, which focuses on observable behaviours. Applications of Conditioning Conditioning principles are applied in education to encourage positive behaviours, in therapy to address phobias, and in marketing to create product associations with positive emotions. Its applications highlight the influence of conditioned responses on daily life and offer strategies for behaviour change.


Awareness means observing your thoughts and feelings without judgment. When you notice negative stories like “I am not enough” or “I must please others,” you create space to question and change them. Mindfulness practices help develop this awareness by training you to watch your mind rather than get lost in it.


Try this simple exercise:


  • Sit quietly and focus on your breath for a few minutes.

  • When thoughts arise, notice them without reacting.

  • Identify any recurring negative beliefs.

  • Ask yourself if these beliefs are truly yours or imposed by others.


This practice helps you separate your authentic self from conditioned patterns.



Grounding Yourself in the Present


Staying connected to your body and breath anchors you in the present moment. Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned spiritual teacher, said, “Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.” When you focus on your breath, you calm the mind and reduce the ego’s grip.

  • Deep, slow breathing

  • Feeling your feet on the ground

  • Noticing physical sensations in your body

  • Reconnecting to your body by feeling your clothing on your skin


These simple actions help you stay rooted in your true self rather than being swept away


by fear or doubt.



Releasing Limiting Beliefs


Once you become aware of conditioned beliefs, you can begin to release them. This process takes time and patience. Here are some practical ways to let go:


  • Write down limiting beliefs and challenge their truth. For example, if you believe “I am not worthy,” list evidence that contradicts this.

  • Replace negative self-talk with affirmations that reflect your true value.

  • Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage your authentic expression.

  • Practice self-compassion to heal past wounds that fuel limiting beliefs.


By consistently working on these steps, you weaken the hold of conditioning and open space for your inner power.



Connecting to Your Inner Power





Your inner power comes from recognising your true self as awareness beyond thoughts and fears. It is the source of creativity, confidence, and peace. To connect with this power:


  • Spend time in solitude to listen deeply to your inner voice.

  • Engage in activities that bring joy and flow, such as art, nature walks, or meditation.

  • Trust your intuition when making decisions.

  • Set boundaries that honour your needs and values.

  • Pause before reacting to see if your response comes from fear or your true self.

  • Speak honestly and kindly, even when it feels vulnerable.

  • Let go of the need for approval and embrace your uniqueness.

Your true self is connected to a universal source—an infinite, boundless energy that flows through everything. When you align with this source, you tap into a wellspring of love, creativity, and peace. Meditation, nature, and moments of stillness help you reconnect with this energy, dissolving the barriers of fear and scarcity.


As Deepak Chopra affirms, “In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you.” Allowing everything to flow naturally, without resistance, creates space for your authentic self to emerge and flourish.



Letting Go of Fear and Scarcity


Fear and scarcity are often rooted in the ego’s need to control and protect itself. But true freedom comes when we release these limiting beliefs and trust in the universe's abundance. When you let go of attachment to outcomes and surrender to the flow of life, you open yourself to new possibilities.


Eckhart Tolle also reminds us, “Realise deeply that the present moment is all you ever have. Make the Now the primary focus of your life.”

Living in the present allows you to let go of fears about the past and the future, anchoring you in your true self.

To embody your true self, create space—mentally, emotionally, and physically. Practice self-compassion, forgiveness, and patience. As Ram Dass said, “We’re all just walking each other home.” Supporting yourself with kindness allows you to shed the layers of fear and limiting beliefs, revealing the authentic core within.
